High Availability and Recovery Solutions for Microsoft Exchange

XSM Systems, working with our partner, Network Appliance (NetApp), is delivering a solution that significantly enhances Microsoft Exchange environments by dramatically improving their availability, reliablity and scalability at an unmatched low total cost of ownership.

As the trust advisor for our customers, we at XSM constantly hear of the challenges faced by Microsoft Exchange administrators:

• Shrinking backup window;

• Lack of ability to quickly recover from errors/corruptions;

• Challenges around managing Exchange data growth;

• Higher SLAs, Exchange is now a mission-critical application.

Our team of Solutions Architects met and worked with NetApp to create a solution which would address our customers' needs by providing them with the following capabilities:

• Take up to 255 instantaneous backups of the Exchange database using NetApp unique Snapshot technology. Thus elminating the backup windows problems.

• Restore within minutes an entire Exchange Messages Stores, Mailboxes or even individual messages, by combining the Snapshots and NetApp's Single Mailbox Recovery software.

• Grow your Exchange storage on-the-fly without any downtime, using NetApp's ability to dynamically grow volumes.

• Increased responsiveness of Exchange by offloading data processing from Exchange servers to the NetApp Filer.

• Seamless integration with disaster recovery solutions, such as Veritas Netbackup, using NetApp NDMP technology to stream data directly from the Filer to the Tape unit (LAN-Free).

Two solutions were created to address the needs of our Enterprise Customers and our Small to Medium Business (SMB) customers:

• The Enterprise solution provides all of the features mentioned and is specifically designed for customers who require 99.999% availability for their Microsoft Exchange environment. The architecture is fully redundant using a combination of Microsoft's cluster product (MSCS) and NetApp's cluster option (CFO).

• The SMB solution provides our customers with a very cost effective option, yet still providing all of the same capabilities as the Enterprise solution. The only difference between the two solutions, is the cluster support. The SMB solution does not support a cluster. However, the SMB solution can be easily upgraded with the addition of a Gigabit switch to provide full MSCS support.
