Network Appliance Announces that Sun Microsystems Now Supports Its Network File System Protocol

Network File System Support Provides Sun Java™ System Messaging Server Customers with Data Management and Compliance Capabilities That Reduce Cost and Complexity

SUNNYVALE, Calif. – February 16, 2005 -- Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP) today announced that Sun Java System Messaging Server now supports the NetApp® implementation of the Network File System (NFS) protocol to provide increased data management and compliance capabilities in the Sun Java System Messaging Server and NFS server environments. Through NetApp unified storage, powered by Data ONTAP™ 7G enterprise storage software, which provides the world’s first dynamic virtualization engine, customers of the Sun Java System Messaging Server can now reduce the complexity of message storage, execute rapid backup and recovery, and lower their total cost of ownership of archiving and storing messages.

“NetApp continues to collaborate and innovate with industry leaders to deliver compelling technology based on customer data management and compliance needs,” said Patrick Rogers, vice president of Partner and Alliances Marketing at Network Appliance. “Sun support of NetApp NFS with Sun Java System Messaging Server enables customers to capitalize on the latest NetApp technology advances, including the newly released Data ONTAP 7G software, which powers the entire family of NetApp storage systems.”

Sun Java System Messaging Server customers using NetApp storage with Data ONTAP 7G software can double their storage utilization and significantly reduce storage management costs in multiapplication environments. Data ONTAP 7G automatically manages fine-grained data and enables administrators to shrink, or expand, volumes on-the-fly. Other solutions on the market require heavy administrator intervention to allocate storage, driving up overall storage costs.

“The NFS standard has a significant following in the market, and Sun is taking an aggressive approach in developing solutions that provide our customers with the most complete and advanced storage possible,” said Jennifer Belissent, group marketing manager, Sun Java Systems Communications Suite, Sun Microsystems, Inc. “Together, NetApp and Sun are delivering a low-cost and highly reliable storage offering that will meet the most stringent customer requirements.”
